If a PC connection does exists, then images can be downloaded via dual industry standard Gig-E ports on the rear of the camera which enable 1GB of high-speed camera data to be offloaded in just seven and a half (7.5) seconds! Currently SD cards can write up to 67.5MB per second, with higher rates expected in the near future. The camera’s SD write speed depends upon that of the SD media that is used. SD media is readily and cheaply available, unlike expensive solid state memory drives that cost thousands of dollars and require specialized hardware to read.

Two SD card slots built into the rear of the camera allow for the download of recorded image data from the camera without the need for a PC connection. Higher light sensitivity means less additional lighting is required, or higher framing rates or shutter speeds (SA-X2 offers shuttering to 293ns) can be used with existing lighting conditions.

The system is supplied with intuitive and feature rich Photron FASTCAM Viewer (PFV) software and Photron Device Control SDK (software development kit) allowing integration with user specific software. The system also features memory segmentation to allow recording in one memory partition while at the same time downloading a previous recording, and the ability to remotely switch off cooling fans to eliminate vibration when recording at high magnifications. Standard operational features of the FASTCAM SA-X2 include a mechanical shutter to allow remote system calibration, dual-channel Gigabit Ethernet Interface for fast image download, and internal memory card drives allowing image download and storage to low cost removable recording media. The FASTCAM SA-X2 system may be controlled over a high-speed Gigabit Ethernet network or via the optional keypad.
A camera system providing high light sensitivity allows a wide range of objective lenses and lighting techniques to be optimized to visualize complex high-speed phenomena. Without high light sensitivity, imaging at high frame rates with short exposure times is not possible. Light sensitivity is often the most critical performance criteria in high speed imaging. Frame rates greater than 1 million fps are available at reduced image resolution with shutter speeds as short as 293 nanoseconds (export restrictions may apply). The system offers recording rates up to 13,500fps at megapixel image resolution with 12-bit dynamic range and high image quality.
